Twenty-one year old artist Devin Johnson’s work attempts to reconcile traditional painting and sculpting practices with the Internet-driven, digital age of contemporary art. Johnson presents a variety of minimalist geometry, clean color contrasts, and tribal-inspired exaggerations of humanity in his hand-stained, wood-slab paintings. Now in the midst of building his first large-scale collection of original pieces, he draws inspiration from the natural lines of the human body and the organic materials he employs. The juxtaposition of loosely realist images atop abstract shapes is characteristic to Johnson’s portfolio, although he remains invested in developing new stylistic practices to ensure the emotional relevancy of his work. Based in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, Johnson continues his formal art-school training while drawing inspiration from individuals like Jean-Michel Basquiat and his own local creative community.
